The Creek After the Rain

It came up to the second step of the footbridge and went back down by morning.

Willow Creek rose about three feet after last weekend's rain, which put it at the second step of the footbridge by the old mill. That is high, but not the highest. The marks painted on the bridge post show four floods that went higher, the worst in 1987, when the water reached the railing.

By Monday morning it was back inside its banks, carrying the usual souvenirs of a high-water weekend: a lawn chair, most of a canoe paddle, and a good deal of somebody's woodpile.

The town crew walked the banks on Tuesday and found one place, behind the hardware store, where the bank had slumped. It has been marked and will be shored up before the spring melt. The footbridge itself, inspected the same day, is fine.

If you live along the creek and saw anything we should know about, the newsroom address is at the foot of this page. The best records of this creek have always come from the people who watch it from their kitchen windows.
